This year we are all looking for ways to stay healthy during the COVID pandemic. Many individuals are trying to lead healthier lifestyles to boost their immune systems. There are no easy or quick fixes. What vitamins work to help & improve immune function?
There are many different vitamins that play into our overall immune function. When it comes to autoimmune diseases different vitamins have a greater effect on conditions at times. These vitamins may be instrumental in killing harmful microbes & help the body fight off infections.
💊 Vitamin D. Studies have shown an association with vitamin D deficiency and lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. This vitamin is a fat-soluble nutrient that plays an essential role in immune function by affecting numerous cells that regulate the immune system response. It specifically enhances the fighting or defense response of certain types of white blood cells which results in decreased inflammation. The T cells of the immune system or “killer cells” will not have the ability to attack serious infections or foreign pathogens in the body.
💊 Vitamin C rich food like tangerines, bell peppers, limes, & lemons are all great for boosting the immune system. Spinach, kale, Brussels sprouts, and strawberries are excellent sources.
💊 Vitamin E Is also great at boosting your internal immune system and can be found in foods like spinach and broccoli. Vitamin E can be a powerful antioxidant. Try incorporating almonds, sunflower seeds, and peanuts in your meals.
There are also other vitamins and minerals such as iron, zinc, folate, and selenium that are important for healthy and strong immune function. Body inflammation may be suppressed or better controlled.
Since there is a lack of scientific evidence supporting vitamin supplementation for preventing or treating autoimmune diseases, incorporating vitamins and minerals in a diet is a great way for individuals with autoimmune systems to maintain and boost a healthy immune system!
Remember to get enough sleep and exercise as well!
